A committee of experts has endorsed a new blood test for colon and rectal cancers. Despite acknowledging that the test has limitations, the committee believes it could help increase screening rates for the disease. The FDA usually follows the recommendations of expert committees. In the US, colon and rectal cancers are responsible for around 150,000 diagnoses and 53,000 deaths annually. While colonoscopies and fecal tests are more accurate, the blood test offers convenience for those at average risk. However, it is important to note that the blood test does not detect most precancerous growths, which limits its ability to prevent cancer.
